The Effects

As a result, in 1867, a group of samurai overthrew the Tokugawa Shogunate and restored the Emperor as the head of government.  This period, form 1868 through 1911, is known as the Meiji Restoration.  In this period, the people of Japan built modern industries and they developed a new economy.  After a series of wars, Japan gained control of Taiwan, Korea, and Manchuria.
